Sunday 18th July - SUP ***** - The Dip at Felixstowe – sunny, still and hot.

After a lovely bike ride to Landguard this morning Rob packed a picnic and we headed down to the windsurf car park at The Dip for easy parking thus avoiding the huge crowds elsewhere in Felixstowe as the town was gradually coming to a standstill with hundreds flocking to the coast to make the most of temperatures approaching 30 degrees! Mag is not keen on the beach so stayed at home with our two cats and where it is much cooler. Down at the beach by 12.30, Rob set about pumping up their two Stand up paddle boards which would hopefully support me, Arlo, Rob and Hannah over to the shingle bank now well exposed with the tide low. Kite beach was pretty crowded and there were already several SUP’s out so we could not wait! After my first experience last year on a sup where I embarrassed myself by repeatedly running off the back, I was a little nervous especially as I had Arlo on the front of my board! Rob was on the other board with Hannah swimming alongside, I started on my knees as we headed out to the nearest red channel bouy before turning towards the shingle bar. It was absolutely perfect out offshore on the shingle being next to no one there but looking back at the crowded beach a few hundred metres away. Rob suggested he would paddle back for our picnic while I took the other paddle board away from the side with the strong currant to a quiet area where Hannah and Arlo had loads of fun. I went for a walk along the shingle and meet a swimmer who had made it across but was very nervous of the swim back as the tide was now whizzing in, lucky for hime the Coastwatch boat was here so I waved them over and they took the man back across the river. Rob had arrived back with lunch so we were enjoying that in wonderful peace and quiet. Then the miseries in the coast patrol boat approached and asked us to leave the shingle bar as it was dangerous, they have no authority to do that so we continued with lunch before setting off back to the mainland! We crossed the river with no problems but it was hard going for a bit against the strong currant but we made it back to The Dip in the end:) I really enjoyed the Lidl Mistral SUP which only cost £200, what a bargain, so wide and easy to paddle, not designed to do long distance but super fun! We were running out of time now as Rob wanted to head to Lidl to stock up and our other son Dan was coming for a visit so had to head home! David Coles had come down for a foil but it was even too light for his race kit but he did tell me he had finished repairing my foil board :) Home in time for the visit from Dan, then tea before Rob had to back everything in their little car for the three hour journey home! They got home safely but tired at 10.30, relieved Mag and I could then go to bed absolutely knackered but we enjoyed every minute of their visit and hope its not too long before we see them all again!
